Taste of Perth 2015

Taste of Perth and Electrolux have kicked the second year off with a bang. Yesterday I attended both sessions (afternoon and evening) to get the full experience of Perth’s culinary best.

Perth Bloggers have been diving in, face first, absorbing the delights Taste has to offer. To live vicariously and check out the goods before heading in… find #tasteofperth and #electroluxlovesfood on Instagram. Facebook and Twitter for serious food porn.

There wasn’t as much cheese as I would have liked, but I ensured my palate was satisfied by sampling all Taste had to offer. I was on the rich and bold reds, so I was partial to the stronger cheeses… I particularly enjoyed the Grandvewe Sapphire Blue. Another top pick was the Roquefort by Simon Johnson.

I picked up some goodies through the day and have been nibbling at them since last night…

  • Abhi’s bread – Spelt Brownie Cake No tastings available for it this year, but after my 2014 jaunt, I knew I wanted a package for me to attack. So earthy, sweet and absolutely delicious.
  • The Honeycake Just a single serve enjoyed for breakfast this morning, over coffee.
  • Morish Nuts – Pretzels and Hot Praline Only $4 a pop. Stored in the cupboard for nighttime nibbles… or perhaps today while hiding from the cold weather.
  • Fehlbergs and PeppadewHot Peppers with Cream Cheese Pickly, spicy, bitey and creamy… I love these stuffed peppers and I don’t imagine the jar will last long in this house.

Karvan Coffee is lovingly made by the family run business – Leaf Bean Machine. The team took us a on a journey and ran through 3 blends of coffee bean that were offered for tastings. Each different and beautiful in its complexity. My favourite, the Kathera Estate… absolutely loved the long finish.

  • Karvan Single Origin – Grade 1 Sidamo Berry and orange acidity and flavours. Creamy, silky body. Sweet complex cup with soft stone fruit and floral notes. Dark cocoa on the finish.
  • Karvan Single Estate – Sigri Estate Well balanced acidity with hints of orange, sweet borwn sugar and blackcurrant. Note the creamy, smooth mouth feel. Notes of bittersweet cocoa and almond nougat on the back palate.
  • Karvan Single Estate – Kathera Estate Highly perfumed and aromatic, the Kathera has incredible flavour clarity. Candied orange peel aroma, melted butter upfront, with a distinctive apricot flavour. Long, lingering brown sugar finish.

Due to the light, sadly evening photos were hard to perfect… here is a list of nibbles we tried that we didn’t get photos of:

  • Mary’s Fried Chicken Wings, Kewpie, Roe – two fried wings, boned & filled with kewpie mayo, roe & sauce – so so good. I loved drippy, fat, stuffed wings.
  • Mary’s Pigs Head Ssam – pig head terrine, lettuce, pickled cucumber, radish – wow. this lovely little bite was moorish, flavoursome and full of depth. I wasn’t expecting it to be so good.
  • Bistro Guillaume’s Chicken Liver Parfait – with port jelly, croutons – a little heavy handed on the port… with only 3 croutons I found it hard to finish. Lucky I sourced a spoon to dive in.
  • Modo Mio’s Vitello Tonnato – veal, tuna & caper mayo, quail egg, truffle oil – perfectly seasoned and proportioned well. I want to recreate this at home. Also I am a sucker for anything truffle.

Sadly I didn’t get the chance to do the Lurpak cooking school this year, or partake in any sessions/classes. However last year I took full advantage of as many sessions and classes as I could manage. Check out the my experience from 2014 Taste of Perth on my Instagram.
